Dear Parents and Guardians,

This new coronavirus known as COVID19 is a pandemic that none of us have ever experienced in our lifetime. As scary as it seems, it is important that we as a community work together to fight this infection. We know that this has affected all of you in many different ways. My mom, staff, and I are practicing social distancing, washing hands frequently, avoiding large crowds, and not going out unless absolutely necessary to do basic errands. It is important that you all do so as well so that this pandemic can be over soon. Some common questions that we here are:

My child is sick with a cough, cold, fever - does he/she have COVID?At this point, since COVID is now “community spread” we are telling parents to assume that your child has it and to quarantine your child until he/she is no longer feeling sick. The state does not have the resources to test every child with a cough, cold, fever. The great news though is that so far 100% of affected children in the world ages 9 and less have recovered well. In the age 10-18 years old, the death rate in the world is super low at 0.2%.

Would you ever test any child for COVID if they have flu-like symptoms?Yes, we would. If your child has flu-like symptoms -AND- a history of recent travel in the past 2-3 weeks or a known CONFIRMED COVID exposure (does not include someone waiting for test results) then we would send you for testing. If you don’t have any known confirmed exposures or recent travel, then we recommend you quarantine your child at home. As long as your child is stable (able to drink fluids, no difficulty breathing) then it is okay to stay home.

My child is fine but can I come to clinic just to check if he/she has COVID?We would not recommend for any child with no symptoms to come to clinic unless it’s for a necessary check up that requires vaccines or for newborns. If your child is healthy, the best thing you can do is keep them home and practice social distancing.

My child is sick with flu-like symptoms, what should I do?If your child’s symptoms just started, expect that they can have off and on fevers up to 5-7 days. They can have a sore throat in the first few days but as long as they’re able to eat some solids and drink fluids, then it’s okay to watch them at home. They’re cough can sound pretty bad the first week or so, especially if they have a runny nose also. Coughs don’t go away right away. It can take sometimes 2-3 weeks for it completely disappear. For fevers, make you have acetaminophen (also known as Tylenol) or ibuprofen (also known as Motrin or Advil). Please remember that ibuprofen can only be given for ages 6 months and older. For helping with dosing, click here to see dosing chart.
When should I worry about my child’s cough, cold, fever?
Times that we may want to see your child in clinic:
- Fever lasting more than 5 days
- Worsening cough after 1 week
- Unable to drink anything
- Difficulty, fast breathing

Do you do telehealth?
Yes! Please fill out our telehealth form here and we’ll call you as soon as we can.

What can I do?
The most important thing is to keep your children home as much as possible. Keep them away from any elderly or immunocompromised family members (such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, dialysis, cancer). Practice frequent hand washing for at least 20 seconds each time. Avoid large crowds like Costco, Target, or Walmart.

How can I reach Dr. Elizabeth or Dr. Hazel Abinsay when the clinic is closed?
You can always call Physician’s Exchange at 988-2188 anytime and ask them to connect you with either of us.

Stay safe, stay healthy. Let’s get through this together.
